Class 5: 03/02/09
3-D & PRINTING IN POLYMER
Discussion
We will jump right into the final review of the timepiece project to allow time for everyone. We will review five projects, shift to our guest speaker, then return to the final five.
Guest Speaker
Dino Sanchez, “makes things” http://www.dinosanchez.com/. Dino will discuss his work as a product designer and the way he approaches a form, idea and constraints through physical forms, cad and sketching.
Assignments
1 week form assignement about rapid iteration. What I want you to do in this one is immerse yourself in one focused area to get all your thinking out in a visual form. Choose an object, this can be a shape from the time assignment or an object from another class exploration as the focus of your exploration. Create at least 14 hand sketches on paper and a few in a CAD program (see links below for CAD options). Push your concept. Explore variation and areas of detail.Don’t wait until the end of the week to cram it all in at once. Also, post these up somewhere so you can see them and ideally so others can see them as well and comment.
About the shape, choose something simple, avoid intricate mechanics. An example would be say an exploration of the Coke bottle, finding a new form factor through sketches and CAD.
Document in your blog your experience working by hand and in CAD, specifically describe:
Your object
How you evolved the form and why
What you learned from your sketches
Did your concept change because of the medium (CAD vs sketch)?
How you worked
Work with Sketchup or 3-D tool of choice to further explore form variations.
