Bio
Born a product of a hairdresser and an engineer, my foundation was built with values in the beautiful and the functional.  This led me to study both art and design in order to bring a balance of art making sensibilities and design making strategies to my approach.  The contemplative solitude of Cranbrook Academy of Art paired with the global perspective of the Design Academy lead to a deep understanding of my own values as a creator as well as a comprehensive context of the world for which I create.

I use storytelling as a strategy for designing.  Researching a situation, collecting information, distilling the story and crafting an idea to develop a clear and meaningful product.  Identity is then built to support the result, to create a brand, and continue a narrative.  It is an organic process that seeks to order information and experience while allowing for an evolution of ideas and flexibility of a product.

Assignment
Reading
The iPod and the Bathtub, Luke WiIliams

Build:
Two week individual or group. Re-think the personal timepiece. Explore both the object form and display of a personal time piece. The device does not have to be worn on the wrist but must be a small object you can carry with you. The display does not have to be a literal translation of time but must relate to time and the individual or time and place. Approach this problem in steps. Work on the concept you will explore in words and sketches. Relate the concept to form through the building of clay, foam or other material form. Demonstrate the screen display and interaction through sketches or visual comps.

We will work on this assignment for the next three weeks. Week One, we do not meet, however, I need to see ideas and your plan for how you will approach the problem posted in your blog. Week two, I expect to see your concept and form explorations presented in class 02/23/09. Week three 03/02, you will present your complete concept, form and display.

Please refer to the ITP Materials Wiki for marerials and resources. http://itp.nyu.edu/materials/index.html
Additional information on working with materials can be found on Core77 fabrication resource.

More examples will be posted to the blog over the coming week and I will notify you of new posts.
